Photorejuvenation Q&A

What is photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat conditions related to sun-induced skin damage. It’s also used to treat freckles, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, broken capillaries, acne, or just the overall aging appearance of your skin.

Known as the “ultimate skin eraser,” Dr. Scaffidi utilizes photorejuvenation to effectively erase pigmented areas.

A photorejuvenation treatment gently and effectively treat a wide range of skin conditions, including:

  • Skin discoloration and blemishes
  • Sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Fine Lines and wrinkles
  • Spider veins or broken capillaries
  • Hemangiomas (purple spots on the skin of the face or body)
  • Redness of cheeks
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Telangiectasias (visible capillaries of the skin)
  • Melasma (brown patches)

Photorejuvenation is an excellent choice for patients looking to comfortably improve skin texture and tone with no downtime.

What happens during a photorejuvenation treatment?

Your photorejuvenation treatment should not take more than 30 minutes. You may experience a warm sensation as the light is applied to your skin, but the treatment is very gentle.

What can I expect after my photorejuvenation treatment?

For 2 to 24 hours after your treatment, you may feel like your skin is swollen or flushed. Freckles and hyper-pigmented lesions will turn darker and look dry for four to seven days and then gradually start flaking off naturally.

The typical recovery period varies between two and five days, depending on your skin’s sensitivity and the treatment performed. Still, you can expect to see a substantial difference in hyper-pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, and your overall skin texture within one week of treatment.

How many photorejuvenation treatments will I need?

Depending on your desired results, you’ll typically require three to four half-hour treatments spaced two to six weeks apart. It may take a few sessions to see the best results for some conditions. In general, the more significant your skin blemishes, the more treatments you’ll need.

Your experienced providers create a custom treatment plan for you to obtain your ideal desired results.

How long do my photorejuvenation results last?

Photorejuvenation treatments are both gentle and very effective. After completing your custom treatment plan, you should have one photorejuvenation session once or twice a year as maintenance. Your results will last longer if you take good care of your skin to prevent new problems from developing.
